Technological unemployment: a discussion

چکیده
The objective of this work is to provide a critical assessment of the basic methodology advanced in current macroeconomic theories to understand the relationship between technological progress and unemployment. The standard reference will be the so called natural unemployment schemes, that in what follows will be fully identified with equilibrium unemployment theories1. Our conviction is that unemployment theories abandoned the representation of technological unemployment as a phenomenon with a definite temporal dimension, where it is possible to distinguish over time the phase of ejection from the phase of reabsorption of workers. This traditional way of thinking2, shared by authors like Wicksell, Marshall and Pigou, survived up to the eighty’s3. The recent adoption of intertemporal equilibrium constructions definitively identified the notion of technological unemployment to the logical comparison of alternative equilibrium paths associated to different productivity parameters. The equilibrium nature of this comparison imposes to focus on economies which istantaneously adapt to the technique in use. This work suggests an alternative research perspective where capital ac-

Suppose we are about to enter an era of increasing technological unemployment. What implications does this have for society? Two distinct ethical/social issues would seem to arise. The first is one of distributive justice: how will the (presumed) efficiency gains from automated labour be distributed through society? The second is one of personal fulfillment and meaning: if people no longer have...

This paper studies the impact of long-run productivity growth on job nding and separation rates, and thus the unemployment rate, using a search and matching model. We incorporate disembodied technological progress and on-the-job search into the endogenous job separation model of Mortensen and Pissarides (1994). The incorporation of on-the-job search allows faster growth to reduce unemployment ...

متن کاملSex Work, Technological Unemployment and the Basic Income Guarantee
Is sex work (specifically, prostitution) vulnerable to technological unemployment? Several authors have argued that it is. They claim that the advent of sophisticated sexual robots will lead to the displacement of human prostitutes, just as, say, the advent of sophisticated manufacturing robots have displaced many traditional forms of factory labour. But are they right? In this article, I criti...
